How does social media affect our lifestyles?
As humans, we have all experienced the use of a particular social media platform at least once in our lifetime. Recently, I have read an important article about its positive and negative points and realized how deeply we are drowning in this digital world without considering the dangers to our mental health as well as the valuable time wasted on it.
Whether you like it or not, we are exposed to being addicted to such platforms. Generally, social networks have the potential to boost our life quality; there is no doubt they came to help us by providing many new channels for communication in ways that were not possible before. However, the problems arise when we do not use it in the right way. For instance, they can be overwhelming when selected as a social friend to fill our inward emptiness or when we are becoming obsessed with showing an unrealistic version of ourselves by using the many tools available for manipulating visual data or portraying our lives online in a way that’s not totally true.
Major cons of social media
· Losing touch with friends or loved ones
It is interesting to know that social media is acting as a double-edged sword. I remember one of my friends who got stuck on its Instagram account to gain more likes with her selfoholic pictures; she intended to grab others’ attention and get more comments and so always had her cellphone in her hands checking her notifications and comments in an obsessive manner. After a while, she reached to the point where she couldn’t manage this state anymore. She missed most of her real friends due to her ridiculous manner and fell into depression.
So, social media kina ruined her life instead of improving it. It separated her from her loved ones instead of keeping them more close. It is really disappointing that while some people are making progress through social media, others get themselves in trouble by sticking to nonsense stuff.
· Losing self-esteem
Many people use social media to make up for their loneliness and shortages in life by showing off only the bright side of their lives. They are constantly exaggerating their joy and happiness or their luxury belongings or travels. This practice has become so contagious that it’s difficult to compensate for the negative consequences it has on self-esteem and self-confidence of people especially teenagers. Not everyone has the ability to think and act reasonably when exposed to a large number of this stuff in online environments. I hope the day comes when we act more realistic and are able to make a balance between our dark side in life and the bright one.
Major pros of social media
· Easy access to a welter of information
Undoubtedly, social media enables us to have instant access to all types of news and information effectively and quickly. We can learn about almost any imaginable topic on social media. People from all walks of life can easily get more informed and educated by having access to inspirational, education and entertaining contents.
· Making money
With so many users, many business and people leverage social media to enhance their visibility, get access to their target audience, and generate revenue. Social media is a great tool for marketing or even starting a brand new business.
· Keeping in touch with friends, family, and co-workers
You can make sure not to lose contact with your loved ones, especially far-flung friends or family members by using social media. It also enables you to interact with current colleagues or showcase your skills and abilities to find better jobs.
Social media, like any other technology, has been a big achievement in the digital world; this progress is affecting people’s personality traits and lifestyles in both negative and positive ways. Indeed, approximately all of us wish to serve our mental desires by constantly using it, but it needs a little bit thoughtfulness to identify what role we are playing as a social media user and adjust our way if it’s not right.
